Baby’s First Grill

by Megan on April 18, 2010

Back when we lived in the condo, both Danny and I were always SO jealous of everyone who owned a grill.  Since we had a second floor unit, obviously, we couldn’t put any such thing on our back porch.  And, our redneck neighbors who kept a grill in the bed of their truck and wheeled it out into the parking lot totally annoyed us – so, we sucked it up and used the Foreman when necessary and mostly just mooched off our friends who lived in places that allowed them access to a grill.

As an early birthday/late housewarming gift, my parents took us up to Lowe’s earlier in the week and we picked out our very own grill.  It was assembled and delivered on Friday, and, today was the day that we decided to break it in.

Perhaps it would have been prudent to read the instructions before deciding to make burgers.  We did not realized until about, oh, 5pm that a new grill required seasoning before its first usage.  And, then, there was a whole lot of drama that involved us not being able to get the grill lit (shout out to Mark for coming over at a moments notice to help us out).  I was all “rah rah, girl power” earlier in the weekend when I hooked the propane tank up myself.  But, it turns out that I had not hooked it in tight enough and that is why it would not work.  Doh.

At any rate, Danny wanted to try to make burgers tonight.  He was very cute in his excitement about manning the grill.

DSC_1043I insisted on something green, so, we threw some asparagus on as well.  I LOVE grilled vegetables and the asparagus did not disappoint.  I foresee a ton of grilled veggies in my future this summer.

We both agreed that he burgers were a lot of work for something that we could either take or leave.  I think we made a rookie mistake when we bought premade patties from the grocery store.  I am not a big beef eater and the patty was way to thick for my liking.  They took a long time to cook and Danny may or may not get food poisoning tonight because his was still super red (even though the meat thermometer was giving us a temperature of 160).

I have every intention of trying to make grilled fajitas tomorrow night – so, we will see how that goes.  I am looking forward to getting the hang of this thing because we have a ton of cookouts to host as payback for all the mooching we did over the last few years.

In other news, we actually ::gasps:: went out this weekend.  Southern Culture on the Skids was playing a free show downtown last night and we headed down there with Carla and Mark.  Danny, in all of his infinite music nerdom, had never actually heard of SCOTS and I am still not sure how much he liked them.

I used to love those guys back in high school and I thought that they put on a fun show.  Not familiar with their popular hit, “Camel Walk”?  I suggest you check it out.

Time to go finish the evening laying on the couch catching up on the DVR.  Stay tuned for the next adventures in grilling!
