Today marks the one week mark of Gracie’s recovery. It was a little touch and go for the first few days, but, we managed to survive with (most of) our sanity intact. The Acepromazine has been a life saver in keeping Gracie’s anxiety in check and allowing everyone in our house to get some sleep at night.
This is not to say that she has started adjusting any better to being cooped up in her crate all day. I came home for lunch today and saw that while I was at work all morning she had thrown such a fit that her crate was moved into a diagonal position. This crate is huge and I am starting to worry that she is going to hurt herself. I think that over the weekend we might try and brainstorm a way to take her back to the office.
A screenshot from the “Gracie-cam”. We spent a lot of time watching Orange is the New Black last weekend and Gracie says that she understands how it feels to be incarcerated.
I knew that she was starting to feel more like herself on Saturday when I caught her snuggling with Danny in the office. This is the first time that she has felt comfortable lying on her back since she originally hurt herself over 3 weeks ago.
Another sign that she is feeling better? She constantly tries to go to the front door for a walk. We are on strict orders not to overdo things, so, she gets a couple of 5 to 10 minute walks down our street daily. She wants to keep going and gets mad when I make her head back in the direction of home.
As if we didn’t look crazy enough with the sling, I now must wear my training belt on our rehab walks in order to lure her back to the house.
After work this evening I decided that maybe some fresh air would do Gracie some good. We headed outside spent a few minutes hanging out on the deck. Nature time only lasted a few minutes because it was really hot, but, she seemed to enjoy the change of scenery. Maybe we will try again later when it isn’t a billion degrees outside.
In other news, we have some new signage up on the front door. I didn’t clear this with our HOA before putting it up, so, I fully expect to get a nastygram in the mail any day.
So that’s where we are a week into the recovery period. It still pretty much sucks, but, things have gotten better since this time last week.
