(This blog title is to be sung to the tune of “Come on Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runner’s, as I have had that song stuck in my head all week)
Last night Danny and I had plans for a nice fondue dinner out at The Little Dipper. It is our anniversary weekend and that is our go to “special occasion” restaurant. Unfortunately, I got a call yesterday around noon informing me that they were shutting the restaurant down due to the storm. This made me very sad.
Danny, on the other hand, was not totally broken up because it meant that he got to tear into his anniversary present early (pizza shipped in from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago).
We ate dinner at approximately 4:45pm yesterday because our power kept flickering and Danny was SUPER concerned that we would lose power and he wouldn’t be able to enjoy his pizza.
As the storm started to rage, Gracie decided that she was not a fan of hurricanes at all. Eventually, she decided that she had enough and retreated to her crate (she only goes in there willingly when she is majorly stressed out).
In preparation for a power outage, I created a “charging station” in our bedroom…
..the amount of technology in our house is absurd.
<rant> I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but, the national news really did an awful job of covering what was happening in SE North Carolina. We were one of the first places to experience the hurricane, but, the Weather Channel/NBC/CNN was so consumed with covering the IMPENDING DOOM in the Northeast (mostly NYC) that it was nearly impossible to figure out what was going on in our hometown. We mainly relied on social media (Facebook) for updates. Our local news did a good job of coverage, but, they were not on the air 24/7, which made the information flow slow. Thankfully, their facebook page was being updated constantly throughout the night. </rant>
As it got later, we started hearing a few things brush against our windows. We actually never lost power, which is amazing.
No major damage to report at our house. Some of our neighbors were not so lucky – we saw once fence down and a tree on the neighborhood clubhouse as well.
Around noon today we were both starting to go a bit stir crazy. Even though the news was recommending that people stay off the roads, we headed over to Danny’s moms house to assess the damage.
Nothing too terrible over there – but, there is a lot of fallen branches and stuff. I am trying to convince Danny that we should just hire someone to clear it all out (instead of doing it ourselves)…we’ll see how that discussion goes…
We wound up at The Mellow Mushroom for lunch. Big ups to them for opening up – best avocado sandwich ever!
And I have just been informed that The Little Dipper will open at 6pm for dinner tonight. Reservations have been made, and it looks like our anniversary dinner will happen after all.
So long Hurricane Irene!
