I have never been super into Valentines Day. I guess it goes back to my pre-Danny days when I was always super bitter about being single and did things like make “anti-Valentines Day” mixed CDs for my friends. It was actually right around Februrary 14th when I first met Danny and even so, we have never really been the type to go all out celebrating the day. Usually we go out to dinner sometime around the week of Feb. 14th and that is it.
This year though, I have to say, was one of the best Valentines Day weekends ever. It started on Friday evening when we went to The Melting Pot for a fondue dinner. I absolutely love fondue – but we do not go that often because it is super expensive. I actually prefer The Little Dipper downtown (better food and it is locally owned), but, it turns out that if you are trying to make a fondue reservation for Valentines weekend you really need to plan ahead. We tried to get a reservation on Thursday and they were booked solid – so, The Melting Pot it was. It is hard to go wrong with marshmellows dipped in Chocolate/Peanut Butter though, so it was fine.
On the way home, it started snowing and when I woke up on Saturday morning, my backyard looked like this:
Normally, I would be super excited about snow in southeastern NC, but, not this weekend. We had Duke/Maryland basketball tickets for Saturday and, honestly, I was not a happy camper at the thought of having to bail on the game because of road conditions. After a bit of deliberating (and honestly, a lot of pouting and sulking on my part) we decided to hit I-40 and try and make it up to the game. The plan was that once we got on the interstate we would reassess and if things looked unsafe we would turn around.
I am so, so glad that we decided to give it a go, because once we got on the outskirts of town everything was clear. We made it up to Durham and to my second favorite place on earth (Wrigley Field falls at #1 on the list) in time to settle into our seats and watch Duke pound Maryland for sole possession of first place in the conference.
Since Gracie was still at Dogs at Play this morning we were able to sleep in – which I desperately needed (and so did Danny after his emergency work trip across the country earlier in the week). I think that I clocked in at right around 10 hours of sleep and it was glorious. I usually feel like a bum if I am not up and functioning on the weekends by 8, but, today I just went with it and it was so nice.
So, to recap – my Valentines weekends consisted of the following: fondue, witnessing a Duke win at Cameron Indoor Stadium and sleeping. Yea, it was pretty awesome!
Tomorrow is Presidents Day, which we do not actually observe in my office. But, Danny is off and I decided that I deserve the day off – so, I am going in to work for a bit, but not the entire day, and I am definitely not going in at 7:30. I have to spent ALL DAY on Tues./Wed. with my dad travelling across the state and, quite frankly, I need tomorrow as a mental health day to get myself psyched up for that fun.
