After 2 layovers (St. Maarten and Charlotte) and clearing customs 3 times – Danny and I returned from our Antiguan honeymoon thoroughly exhausted and glad to be back in the USA. Navigating the Antigua airport upon departure was quite an event. It really made us appreciate good old ILM here in Wilmington.
At any rate, we had a good time. The weather was hot (around 95+ most days) and the water was beautiful. Even though we stayed at an all-inclusive resort (Sandals) we really did not partake in massive consumption of alcohol or food. Mostly this was due to the fact that neither one of us found the food to be particularly amazing. We were kind of expecting the same level of food as we had on our cruise a few years back – and it was a little disappointing to discover that it was not at that level. Some places were better than others – and it did keep us from over eating – but, for the money we paid, it was definitely a little disappointing.
What was NOT disappointing, however, was the location. As far as beaches go – Dickinson Bay (where the resort is located) is absolutely stunning. Most days we split our time between the beach and the pool. I preferred the beach in the morning before it got super crowded.
The pool featured a swim up bar that was pretty great. I think that we got at least a drink a day from it – but I was a little gun shy about drinking too much alcohol in the heat.
After dinner most nights we retired back to the room and hung out and watched tv. Yes, I know we are lame – but, I wasn’t trying to come back from vacation tired from too many late nights! I was happy to see that we were able to get ESPN in the Caribbean and, thus, was able to watch my Blue Devils one night.
The one night that we did stay out late – it was only because we had visions of the “Tuesday Night Chocolate Buffet” dancing in our heads. The buffet was kind of disappointing (when compared to that of the cruise we went on), but, we still found a few goodies to indulge in.
By far, my favorite thing that we did down in Antigua was hire a cab driver to spent the day driving us around and telling us about the island. We went through the rainforest, around the coastline and into historic Nelson’s Dockyard. The best part of the tour, however, was Shirley Heights. The view there was worth the entire trip to Antigua.
Now that we are back – it is time to start getting the house ready to move in. We hired a handyman this week who is changing out all of the light fixtures and fun stuff like that. Tomorrow I am going to attempt to remove the wallpaper in all 3 bathrooms. Wish me luck!
